The Void Left When My Kid Went To College

The house feels different, it’s not exactly a “missing him” feeling. It’s more like something feels off. It’s right in many ways. The 18 years of nurturing and preparing, the launch into the world is predictable, bittersweet. It’s developmentally spot on. It’s that time.

Inspiration in Action by Deb Blum

Inspiration: “The big horrible thing isn’t the plane crash or the earthquake or the diagnosis. When those things occur, we act, we know what to do. We live or we die. Hell is what we do in the meantime. It is the way we starve our souls as we prepare for the future that never comes as planned. The true disaster is living the life in your mind and missing the one in front of you.” ~ Geneen Roth, Lost and Found

Action: Most of us are very much in our minds – analyzing the past, worrying about the future – and missing out on what is happening RIGHT NOW. Somehow we believe that if we worry about and mentally prepare for whatever bad thing we fear, we might prevent it from happening or we might actually be prepared. Geneen Roth’s point is to stop worrying and start living.

Is it possible that you are planning for a loss that already happened (for example, a boyfriend left you when you are were 20 and you still live your life preparing for that to happen)? So often we don’t even know that we are doing this. Can you find a place where you are protecting yourself from a loss that already happened? Can you let it go so that you can live the life in front of you?

True peace and joy comes to us when we learn to show up fully and live in the present moment, unencumbered by our pasts and our worries.

  • Notice when you are caught up in your mind, perseverating over the past or worrying about the future.
  • Gently bring yourself back to THIS MOMENT.
  • One way to do this is to breathe deeply for several breaths.
  • This moment is all you have – stop waiting and start living.
